Public Utilities / Utility Compliance Specialist

An individual in this position performs technical work in the City’s Water and Wastewater Division and is responsible for programs associated with preserving and prolonging the useful life of the City’s utility infrastructure and appurtenances. Ability to read maps and schematic drawings and utilize GIS and GPS. Performs skilled utility location work to identify and physically locate underground utility infrastructure. Responsible for ensuring system wide flushing is performed so that water quality is maintained throughout the service area. Assists in supervising the construction, maintenance, and repair of water and sewer lines, hydrants, meters and valves, and unstopping of sewer lines as needed. Assists with the Fats, Oils and Grease (FOG) and Cross-Connection Programs as needed. The employee may operate automotive or equipment associated with a particular maintenance activity. The employee is subject to working in both indoor and outdoor environments, in extreme hot and cold weather, and exposure to various hazards such as loud noises, vibration, moving mechanical parts, electrical current, chemicals, fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, poor ventilation, and oils. Work also requires on-call and call back duties. Performs other duties as required.

  • Minimum Requirements
    Graduation from high school and considerable experience in plumbing, water distribution and sewer; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Must possess a valid NC Driver License. Must possess or be able to acquire Backflow Prevention and Cross Connection Control ORC Certification. Possession of Wastewater Collection Operator Certification Grade III

Dunn was originally called "Lucknow" and was renamed in 1873

The city of Dunn was incorporated on February 12, 1887, at which time it was a logging town and a turpentine distilling center. The name honors Bennett Dunn, who supervised the construction of the railway line between Wilson and Fayetteville.
