Administration / City Clerk

Position available August 1, 2024. Dunn, pop.9,300. The City of Dunn is seeking candidates for the Clerk to the City Council. As a member of the City of Dunn, You can make a difference! Under general supervision, performs responsible statutory and advanced administrative tasks for the City Manager, Mayor and City Council. Serves as City Clerk to the City Council; prepares and maintains public records including ordinances, proclamations, resolutions, contracts, and agreements; prepares and administers oaths of office. Serves as official custodian of the City seal; performs statutory responsibilities, executes legal documents by affixing the proper signatures of City officials, the City seal and attesting to their compliance with general statutes and local ordinances. Coordinates the preparation of the City Council meetings to include, agenda preparation, council chambers, and public hearing notices. Attends City Council meetings and prepares and distributes minutes thereof. Performs administrative duties for the City Manager, Mayor and Council members by handling correspondence, public inquiries and mail for these officials; researches and compiles information as requested by the Council or City Manager; performs special project work as requested and in the most appropriate manner; handles confidential information. Coordinates Mayor, City Council, City Manager and Department Heads meetings, conferences and travel arrangements. Maintains board, commission and committee appointments and coordinates required notices through advertising; prepares appointment lists and updatesbook; coordinates codification updates of the Code of Ordinances. Supervises the activities of the Administrative Assistant. Thorough knowledge of North Carolina General Statutes governing the responsibilities of the Municipal Clerk and municipal government in general. Considerable knowledge of the organization and functions of City government; of standard and approved practices and procedures employed in the processing, safekeeping and utilization of official City records and documents; considerable knowledge of standard office administration practices and procedures; high standards of accuracy in his/her duties and maintains high quality of communication while interacting with appointed officials, department heads, co-workers, and the general public; ability to handle confidential information appropriately. Performs other related duties as required.

  • Minimum Requirements
    Graduation from an accredited college or university with major course work in business, office administration or related field. One to two years experience in municipal administration, including office management; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities.
  • Special Requirements
    Designation as a Certified Municipal Clerk (CMC), or the ability to obtain certification with three years of hire; Certified North Carolina Notary Public, or the ability to obtain certification within a specified timeframe.

  • Starting Salary Range
    Starting salary: $55,506 depending on qualifications.

Dunn was originally called "Lucknow" and was renamed in 1873

The city of Dunn was incorporated on February 12, 1887, at which time it was a logging town and a turpentine distilling center. The name honors Bennett Dunn, who supervised the construction of the railway line between Wilson and Fayetteville.
