Planning and Inspections / Planning Technician

The City of Dunn is currently accepting applications for the position of Planning Technician. This position performs specialized research and administrative work to support the activities of the Planning & Inspections Department and requires a professional individual with excellent oral and written communication skills and attention to detail. Duties include: • Providing technical and paraprofessional support in planning and development, assisting with tasks like reviewing plans, processing applications, and answering public inquiries related to zoning, land use, and permits. • Reviews site plans and zoning permit applications to assure compliance with requirements such as use, landscaping, setbacks, impervious surfaces, and parking requirements. • Develops and maintains automated tracking systems, hard copy files, and records. • Researches and compiles information on a variety of planning issues from multiple sources. • Prepares public notices or property owner zoning verifications. • Prepares maps, charts, and tables of limited complexity. • Prepares lien letters, spreadsheets for liens, and records liens with Harnett County. • Investigates violations of planning and zoning regulations and ordinances, including site visits. • Assists with preparation of and presentations for Planning Board, Board of Adjustment, and other citizen-based boards and committees, as needed; including transcribing meeting minutes. • Attends public meetings, assisting other planning staff as appropriate. • Performs other related work, as assigned. Candidate must be proficient in computer programs and applications, including Microsoft Office, permitting software, database management, and Internet applications; general knowledge of GIS programs and application. Some evening work will be required.

  • Minimum Requirements
    The Planning Technician position requires, at a minimum, the completion of an associate's degree in urban planning, architecture, construction management, social sciences, or relevant work experience that provides comparable skill sets. At least two years of experience in site plan review, zoning administration, and building code issuance is also required. A bachelor's degree is preferred and may substitute for two years of experience.

Dunn was originally called "Lucknow" and was renamed in 1873

The city of Dunn was incorporated on February 12, 1887, at which time it was a logging town and a turpentine distilling center. The name honors Bennett Dunn, who supervised the construction of the railway line between Wilson and Fayetteville.
